The Ottawa 2026 Wheelchair Basketball World Championships is entering its final stages, with just four teams remaining in contention for the title: Great Britain, the Netherlands, Canada and the United States.
All four teams secured convincing quarter-final victories on Wednesday, 16 September, at TD Place, confirming the line-up for Thursday’s semi-finals.
Great Britain will face the United States at 14:45, before hosts Canada take on the Netherlands at 19:15. Both semi-finals will be played at TD Place.
Great Britain were the first team to secure their place in the Final Four, producing a dominant performance to defeat Germany 81–38. The British controlled the game from the opening quarter and had four players scoring in double figures. Jade Atkin led the scoring with 23 points, followed by Joy Haizelden with 18, Robyn Love with 14 and Lucy Robinson with 13.
Canada were next to advance. After their heroic double-overtime victory against Great Britain secured top spot in Group A, the hosts faced Japan in the quarter-finals.
Kady Dandeneau delivered a remarkable performance, recording 49 points and 12 rebounds as Canada secured an 88–68 victory. Aarin Young also impressed with 30 points, while Chihiro Kitada led Japan with 25.
The United States controlled their quarter-final against China from the outset, eventually completing a 71–47 victory. With her team holding a comfortable advantage, USA head coach Jeremy Lade was able to use all 12 players during the game.
Lindsey Zurbrugg and Ixhelt Gonzalez led the American scoring with 16 points each, while Peixi Zuo recorded 17 points for China.
The Netherlands completed the semi-final line-up with a commanding 75–38 victory over Spain. Mariska Beijer led the Dutch scoring with 21 points, while Bo Kramer recorded a double-double of 18 points and 15 rebounds.
The four teams eliminated in the quarter-finals will now compete in the 5th–8th place classification games at Carleton University on Thursday. Germany will face China at 12:15, before Spain take on Japan at 14:30.
In the women’s 9th–12th place classification games, Australia defeated France 54–38. Laura Davoli scored 15 points, while Georgia Munro-Cook contributed 14 points, nine rebounds and nine assists.
Brazil were equally impressive against Algeria, recording an 87–28 victory behind a 23-point performance from Geisa Vieira.
Australia and Brazil will now meet in the 9th-place game at 19:00 on Thursday at Carleton University, while France and Algeria will contest 11th place at 16:45.
Men battle for better positions
In the men’s tournament, the four semi-finalists had a rest day, with three classification games taking place.
In the 9th–16th place classification, Colombia defeated Türkiye 90–79. Luis Angulo led the way with 26 points as Colombia secured a meeting with Brazil on Thursday to determine which team will advance to the 9th-place game.
The United States faced Spain in the 5th–8th place classification, with the Americans earning a 65–55 victory. Jacob Williams was the standout performer with 25 points and nine rebounds, while Ignacio Ortega recorded 20 points and 14 rebounds for Spain.
Japan, following their dramatic quarter-final defeat against Great Britain, responded with a narrow 53–47 victory over Poland. Hiroaki Kozai led Japan with 18 points, while Dominik Mosler scored 16 for Poland.
