The group stage of the women’s tournament at the Ottawa 2026 IWBF Wheelchair Basketball World Championships concluded on Tuesday, 15 September, with the final four matchups determining the eight teams advancing to Wednesday’s quarter-finals.
The highlight of the day was Canada’s thrilling 92–91 victory over Great Britain after two periods of overtime—a game that kept the crowd at Carleton University on the edge of their seats until the final buzzer.
The match took a dramatic turn when Kady Dandeneau was ejected with just under a minute remaining in regulation and Canada leading 68–66. Great Britain fought back to level the score at 70–70 and send the game into overtime.
That was when Arinn Young truly stepped up. Without her key teammate on the court, Canada’s number six took charge of the offence and helped keep the hosts in front during the extra period. However, a three-pointer from Robyn Love tied the game at 79–79 and forced a second overtime.
The contest remained incredibly tight, but Canada entered the final seconds with a four-point advantage. That lead nearly disappeared at the buzzer when Katie Morrow converted a desperate three-pointer before appealing for a foul following contact with her wheelchair. After reviewing the play, the officials ruled that the basket would stand with no foul, confirming Canada’s dramatic 92–91 victory and sparking celebrations among the home crowd.
Young led all scorers with 32 points and added 10 rebounds. Despite missing both overtime periods, Dandeneau recorded an impressive triple-double of 27 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists. Love led Great Britain with 23 points.
China advance to the quarter-finals
In a decisive head-to-head clash for a place in the quarter-finals, China produced an impressive performance to defeat Brazil 61–28 and secure fourth place in Group A. They will now face Group B winners and reigning world and Paralympic champions the USA in the quarter-finals. Qiaoling Qiu led the scoring with 16 points.
Brazil finished fifth in Group A and will now compete in the 9th–12th-place classification games.
Spain narrowly avoided an upset against Australia, who entered the game still searching for their first victory of the tournament. Despite being pushed throughout the contest, Spain prevailed 55–50, with Beatriz Zudaire leading the way with 15 points.
In the opening game of the day, Germany recorded an 84–29 victory over Algeria. Roli-Ann Neubauer led Germany with 23 points, while Algeria’s Kheira Zairi recorded a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds.
