The USA handed defending world champions the Netherlands their first defeat of the Ottawa 2026 IWBF World Championships after Rose Hollermann forced overtime with a dramatic buzzer-beating basket at TD Place on Sunday, 13 September.
With the USA trailing by two in the closing seconds, Hollermann scored at the buzzer to tie the game at 69–69 and send it into overtime. The Americans then dominated the extra period to complete an 81–73 victory.
The result moved the USA above the Netherlands at the top of Group B.
Hollermann delivered an outstanding all-round performance, finishing just short of a triple-double with 24 points, 16 rebounds and eight assists. Mariska Beijer led the Netherlands with 26 points and nine rebounds.
Earlier in Group B, Germany defeated France 50–26. Lisa Bergenthal was the game’s leading scorer with 18 points, while Grâce Wembolua recorded 12 points and nine rebounds for France.
Japan gave Algeria little opportunity to gain a foothold in their encounter, controlling the game from start to finish on their way to a 71–29 victory. Chihiro Kitada starred with 21 points and nine rebounds, while Kheira Zairi scored 15 points for Algeria.
Canada overpower Brazil as Spain edge China
In Group A, Canada produced a commanding performance to defeat Brazil 80–37. Arinn Young led the way for the hosts with 23 points in just 23 minutes, while Geisa Vieira was Brazil’s leading scorer with eight points.
Spain and China contested one of the most exciting games of the day, with Spain emerging as 44–41 winners.
Isabel Chavarría played a pivotal role in the Spanish victory, recording a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds. China’s Xuemei Zhang also produced an impressive performance, finishing with 18 points and 15 rebounds.
Great Britain completed the day’s action at TD Place with a convincing 75–39 victory over Australia. Katie Morrow led all scorers with 18 points, while Laura Davoli scored 14 for Australia.
