Day two of the 2017 IWBF Africa World Championship Qualifiers opened with an exhilarating game between Algeria and Morocco. Morocco started well and pushed out to a 9-2 lead. Algeria regrouped, and a 14-0 run put them in a strong position going into the second quarter, which ended with them in control of the game with an 18-point advantage at half-time. However, the game was not over, and Morocco made a comeback to get to within three points with two minutes remaining. Despite the opportunity to level the game, the shots did not drop and it was Algeria who held on to win the game by four, 56-52. Statistics
Algeria’s Nabil Guedoun shot impressively with 37 points at 59%, whilst Morocco were led by Rida Maataoui’s double-double of 19 points and 15 rebounds.

Angola took to the court for their first game of the tournament in the second game of the day against Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe bounced back from their defeat against Egypt with a comfortable win defeating the Angolans with quarter scores of 15-9, 13-4, 19-9, 17-8, to take home a 64-30 victory. Statistics

Zimbabwe’s Taona Ziki was instrumental with 34 points and 19 rebounds. Top scorers for Angola were Miguel Antonio de Barros and Eduardo Herculano Sampaio with 10 points and 8 points, respectively.
There were mixed fortunes for host nation South Africa in the following two games. Their women’s team opened the women’s competition with a clinical 46-9 win against Zimbabwe women, keeping the Zimbabwean team to just one basket in the opening quarter, 21-2. Zimbabwe continued to fight in the second half, but the experience of the South Africans was too much. Statistics

Their male counterparts were not as fortunate, going down to Egypt 70-35. The game started at a frenetic pace with Egypt holding a slight advantage, 8-5, in the opening minutes. They expanded this advantage going on a ten-point run to lead 20-7 at the end of the first, the momentum stayed with Egypt in the second quarter as they added to the deficit taking a 22 point lead into the halftime break, 15 -37. The second half continued in a similar fashion, although the South Africans kept the quarter scores closer 11-19 and 9-14, giving Egypt their second win of the competition. Statistics

The experience of reigning champions Algeria women was much too much for a young and inexperienced Kenyan team as they were kept scoreless, 87-0. Algeria’s Head Coach, Djawed Zigh, rotated his bench and gave all his team court-time with top scorers Djamila Khemgani and Kheira Zairi getting 21 points apiece. Statistics
Algeria and Angola men were on court for the second time of the day. Algeria buoyed by their earlier win, confidently brushed past the Angolan team with quarter scores 24-4, 18-8, 17-10 and 17-7 to win, 76-29 and go 3-0 in the competition. Statistics
