It was semi-finals day on the penultimate day of the Centro Basket Costa Rica BSR 2016.
In the first semi-final El Salvador were no match for Mexico. Mexico’s Edgar Perdomo driving his team forward with 11 points in the half and giving Mexico a 47 – 18 lead.
In the second half Mexico continued to dominate with quarter scores of 15 - 6 and 18 – 5 for a final score of 80 – 29 and ensure them a spot in the gold medal game.
Top scorers for Mexico - Efrain Martinez with 21 points and Edgar Perdomo with 20 point. For El Salvador - Henry Ganuza Ayala with 11 points.
In the second semi-final it was a similar story as Puerto Rico dominated Nicaragua pushing out to a 39 – 10 lead in the first half on the strength of a 19 point run by Carlos Martinez. Puerto Rico kept the pressure up in the second half with quarter scores of 19 – 8 and 15 – 8. Guaranteeing Puerto Rico a place in the final game, 73-26.
Nicaragua and El Salvador will now play for Bronze and the third spot to play in the Americas Cup, to be held in Colombia 2017 for a chance to qualify for the World Championships 2018.
Top scorers for Puerto Rico - Carlos Martinez with 19 points and Carlos Ocasio with 12 points and for Nicaragua Richard Hodgson with 10 points.
In the classification round robin to determine the final standings between the bottom three teams Costa Rica and Guatemala both secured wins over Honduras. Costa Rica won the first game 68 – 20, Peter Rogas led the point scoring for them with 29 points followed closely by Kenneth Gonzlaes with 20 points. Honduras’ Jorge Rivera was their top scorer with 10 points.
In the second classification game Guatemala took the game 61 – 28 over Honduras. Setting up a deciding game for 5th place against Costa Rica.
Day 6 - Sunday 30th October:
12:00 - Bronze – El Salvador v Nicaragua (Winner will claim third qualification spot to Americas Cup)
14:00 - 5th/6th Game – Guatemala v Costa Rica
16:00 - Gold – Mexico v Puerto Rico
