The knockout stage of the men’s tournament at the Ottawa 2026 IWBF Wheelchair Basketball World Championships began on Monday, 14 September, with Poland producing the standout result of the Round of 16 by eliminating hosts Canada with a 79–65 victory at TD Place.
The result ended Canada’s hopes of winning the title on home soil and extended their wait for another World Championship crown, having last lifted the trophy in 2006.
Mateusz Filipski was the architect of Poland’s victory, recording an outstanding triple-double of 26 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists. Andrzej Macek added 19 points, while Dominik Mosler contributed 18 points and 10 assists.
For Canada, Nikola Goncin led the way with 22 points and nine rebounds. Veteran Colin Higgins came close to a triple-double, finishing with 17 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists.
Group winners confirm favourite status
The four teams that topped their respective groups during the preliminary stage all secured places in the quarter-finals.
Italy, who finished ahead of the USA in Group A, continued their impressive unbeaten run with a 71–44 victory over Argentina. Filippo Carossino led the scoring with 19 points and added nine rebounds, while Joel Gabas scored 10 points for Argentina.
Group B winners Australia also advanced following a 69–44 victory over Brazil. Young star Jaylen Brown recorded a double-double of 20 points and 13 rebounds, while Cristiano Clemente led Brazil with 20 points.
Germany, who topped Group D, took control of their game against Colombia from the second quarter onwards, securing a 77–63 win. Matthias Güntner led Germany with 20 points and seven rebounds, while Jhon Hernández scored 20 points for Colombia.
Japan, the winners of Group C, advanced following a forfeit victory over Iran.
In the day’s other Round of 16 games, the United States bounced back with a convincing 69–44 victory over Türkiye, led by Joel Salazar’s 24 points.
Spain recorded a commanding 90–44 win over Morocco, with Manuel Lorenzo scoring 31 points. Meanwhile, Great Britain pulled away in the second half to defeat the Netherlands 69–47, led by Lee Manning’s 18 points.
Women’s group stage nears its conclusion
There were two games in the women’s tournament on Monday, both in Group B.
The Netherlands comfortably defeated France 87–23, with Mariska Beijer producing an outstanding performance of 26 points and 18 rebounds.
The USA then recorded a 73–47 victory over Japan, with Rose Hollermann leading the Americans with 16 points.
The women’s group stage concludes on Tuesday, 15 September, with the final four games determining the quarter-final line-up.
