The opening game of Day 2 at the Carioca Arena saw the Argentina Women's Team put up a gritty performance against Great Britain in Pool A.

A stunning first six minutes by Great Britain saw the team race to a 13-0; Argentina hit back with a fantastic basket but the GB Women ended the opening quarter ahead by 20-2. Argentina continued to fight back in the second, tripling their points tally, but Great Britain led by 34-6 at half time.

The third quarter saw the GB Women move to a 55-9 advantage, but Argentina’s gritty performance then saw them double their score in the final 10 minutes of the game – pressuring Great Britain at both ends of the court. It was, however, the GB team who secured victory by 79-20.

Argentina Head Coach Carlos Cardarelli said: “It was a very difficult game and very intensive. Argentina played defence very well, but Great Britain is one of the best teams in the world.

“Tomorrow, it’s going to be very difficult too because Canada are champions of the world.”

Great Britain’s Katie Morrow earned her first Paralympic points and said: “The support of all the guys in the audience and on the bench really helped me. I think it’s just a massive win for us today.

“With Germany tomorrow, we’ve had a few games where we’ve them and they’ve beaten us, so time will tell.”
