Both GB and Iran came into the game looking to get their second win of Pool B at the Rio 2016.
It was Great Britain who took the initiative in the first quarter and opened up a 6 point lead early on, maintaining for the rest of the quarter. The second quarter was much more even as the Iranian team fought back but it was GB who took control of the game going into the half time break, 46 -34.
GB rotated their bench well in the second half giving all the players valuable court time. Iran could not keep up with the speed of the GB team who took advantage of this and scored 25 points from fast breaks which assisted GB to finished the game 24 points ahead, final score 84-60.
Iran’s top scorer Omid Hadiazhar said, “Their shots went in and ours didn’t. We did play really well but it was just a matter of luck that theirs went in and ours didn’t. We will now put in the sweat and the hardwork in the next the game, we will learn lessons from the loss today and we can just hope for the best and I think it will be a good outcome.”
Great Britain’s joint top scorer Ian Sagar said, “The game went really well, yesterday we got a good win and today we got another win but more importantly than that is how we are playing, it’s the performance, our style of play and we are clicking. So hopefully we can carry this on throughout the group stages and into the knock out stages as well.
On tomorrow’s game against hosts Brazil he said, “I hear it’s a sold out game which will mean about 15,000 people inside the venue the last time I experienced that was back in London and that was our home crowd. I know what that did for me back then so tomorrow it will certainly give Brazil a little bit of extra energy but we will recover well from today do our homework and video sessions and hopefully we can keep our good run going.”
