The 2026 U25 Africa Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Championship marked a significant milestone for the development of the sport on the continent, serving as the qualification event for the 2027 IWBF U25 Women’s World Championship.

For the first time, four teams competed in a U25 women’s African championship, underlining continued progress in participation and investment in the women’s game across Africa. The Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, South Africa, and Liberia contested the competition, held from 16–20 March 2026 at the Gymnase Multisports de la Police Nationale.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo delivered an outstanding and dominant performance throughout the tournament, finishing unbeaten to secure qualification for the 2027 U25 Women’s World Championship. This achievement marks a historic first for the nation, who will make their debut appearance at this level of global competition.

Across five days of competition, DR Congo recorded a series of convincing victories, including wins over Kenya (40–9, 60–24), South Africa (65–3), and Liberia (81–4, 99–4), demonstrating their strength and consistency.

Kenya finished in second place following strong performances, including victories over South Africa (35–20) and Liberia (64–6). South Africa secured third place, highlighted by wins against Liberia (27–9, 39–3) and Kenya (41–15). Liberia, competing at this level, gained valuable experience as part of their continued development.

The championship represents an important step forward for women’s wheelchair basketball in Africa. The presence of four competing nations reflects growing engagement across the region and provides a stronger competitive pathway for athletes.

With qualification secured, DR Congo will ensure that a new African nation is represented at the 2027 U25 Women’s World Championship, further strengthening the global reach and diversity of the sport.
