Kenya have withdrawn from the 2020 IWBF Afro Paralympic Qualifiers that are scheduled to begin on Sunday 1 March in Johannesburg, South Africa.
This disappointing development has meant that there will be only four countries taking part in the tournament, which serves as the Africa’s Zone Qualifiers for the wheelchair basketball competition at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics Games.
The withdrawal of Kenya, who have withdrawn both their men’s and women’s team, means late changes to the schedule.
Taking place at the Vodacom Mandeville Indoor Sports Center in Johannesburg, the 2020 Afro Paralympic Qualifiers will now see four countries take part in the men’s competition and two countries in the women’s competition.
In the men’s section the countries taking part are: South Africa, Morocco, Algeria and Egypt. The four teams will play in a round robin for placings in the group. First placed team will then face the team in third, with second place facing fourth in the semi-finals. The winners progressing to the final in a bid for the gold medal and place at the Paralympic Games.
South Africa and Algeria will play off against each other for the women’s ticket to Tokyo in and it will be the best of five games.
