Canada women defeated the United States 82-56 on Tuesday evening to claim the gold medal at the 2017 Americas Cup in Cali, Colombia.

Canada found their stride first at the start of the game, led by some precision shooting from Cindy Ouellet assisting Canada to a 15-3 lead by the end of the first quarter.

The USA, determined to keep the game within their grasp, made a concerted effort at the start of the second quarter and outscored Canada, but the Canadians came back to match the USA's output and extend their advantage to 17 points by half-time.

Following the break the teams exchanged baskets, until Canada started to widen the gap further to go up by 22 points at the end of the third. They continued in this vein through the fourth to earn the victory and take home the gold medal.

Cindy Ouellet led the Canadians with a game-high 35 points and Arinn Young added 15 points with 7 rebounds. Abby Dunkin led USA in scoring with 19 points, and was joined by Lindsey Zurbrugg with 18 points.

Bronze Medal


In the bronze medal game, Brazil women overcame Argentina, 48-29, with quarter scores of 12-7, 13-2, 11-6, 12-14.

Brazil were assisted to the bronze by a leading performance from captain Vileide Almeida with 21 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists. For Argentina it was Maria Pallares and Julieta Olmedo who led the attack, netting 14 points and 11 points respectively.
