The second day of the wheelchair basketball competition at the Lima 2019 Parapan American Games saw both Argentina and Canada men’s teams begin their championship journey’s with a win.

Argentina men tipped off the day against Mexico, both taking to the court for their first games of this year’s competition, and in a close encounter, Argentina edged it thanks to a slightly better shooting percentage, taking the victory, 70-58.

Mexico’s women bounced back from defeat at the hands of Argentina yesterday to get off the mark, beating Colombia, 46-33.

A slow start from Colombia’s men allowed Canada to jump ahead and take control of their first game, pushing out to a twelve point lead at the end of the first half. That gave them enough breathing space to stay ahead and get the win, 64-51.

Canada’s co-captain Bo Hedges said:

“It’s always great to start the tournament off with a win. Colombia is a good team and one of the teams we knew we needed to beat in order to put ourselves in the position we want to be in, so it’s a great start for us in this tournament.”

Brazil men and USA men both continued their winning ways, to go 2-0 and remain tied at the top of pool B. Brazil held off Puerto Rico, 80-67, whilst the USA again showed the reason why they are one of the best teams in the world with another assertive performance, this time over Peru, 114-14.

Canada women ensured they went top of pool A, in the final game of the day, improving their record to 2-0 with an 82-25 victory over Argentina.

The Lima 2019 Parapan American Games is the wheelchair basketball zonal qualification tournament for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, with three men’s spots and two women’s spots available.
