Taking to court in front of a packed home crowd at the Rio Olympic Arena, Brazil Men’s team took on Iran.
Cheered on by the fans, it was Brazil who edged out the first quarter by 13-10. Buoyed by their success, a stunning second quarter saw Brazil triple their points’ tally to enter half time ahead by 39-19.
A gritty performance by Iran in the third saw the team earn 13 points to their opponents 19; Brazil nevertheless moving into the final 10 minutes of the game with a 58-32 advantage. Iran continued to fight back in the fourth quarter, outshooting their opponents by 18-15; it was, however, Brazil who earned a 73-50 win much to the delight of the home spectators.
Brazil’s Marcos Candido Sanchez said: “We had a special plan for this game and it worked well. We are very happy with the result. It was so wonderful to play in front of this crowd.
“We are going to do the best we can against Germany – I’m pretty sure we can win this one.”
