From the start, Brazil ensured they stamped their authority on the semi-final game against Chile, winning the first quarter 20 – 2 and the second 17 – 2.
The pace of the Brazilians caused the Chileans problems defensively as they found themselves in foul trouble, 23% of the Brazilians points coming from the free-throw line.
Brazil’s coach gave all his players court time and extended their lead in the second half as Chile ran out of steam in the final quarter ending the period scoreless, with the game finishing 78- 8 to Brazil to secure a place in the final and their spot in the Americas Cup.
Brazil top scorer was Vileide Almeida with 19 points, whilst Silvelane Oliveira and Oara Uchoa followed next with 11 points each. Luz Carrasco top scored for Chile with 6 points.
The other semi-final proved to be a much tighter affair. Peru cheered on by a noisy home crowd, kept the score close and made it difficult for Argentina, who outscored Peru by only one basket in both quarters of the first half, 12 – 10 and 10 -8, to take a four point lead into the break.
However, Argentina’s depth and stamina proved the difference in the second half and they pushed ahead to gain a fourteen point cushion going in the final quarter. Momentum stayed with Argentina as they continued to drive on and win the fourth 19 -2, to secure a spot in the final and their place at the Americas Cup.
Argentina’s top scorers were Maria Pallares 20 points, Julieta Olmedo 14 points, and Silvia Linari 12 points. Some good team play saw a nice spread of scorers across the Peru team with captain Lucy Herrera leading with 9 points.
Hosts Peru will now play Chile in the 3rd/4th play-off with the winner taking the final place at the Americas Cup.
