The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has confirmed the medal programme and athlete quotas for the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games, including the allocation for wheelchair basketball.
IWBF acknowledges the decision from the IPC confirming that the wheelchair basketball competition at the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games will feature 8 men’s and 8 women’s teams. This maintains the same team numbers as at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
Although IWBF was actively advocating for an increase in quotas for the wheelchair basketball competition, we recognise that the decision has been taken within the broader context of the IPC’s framework of maintaining consistency across team sports, ensuring gender parity, and respecting the overall athlete quota allocated to the Paralympic Games and that any adjustments must be carefully balanced across all impairment groups and sports within the Paralympic movement.
IWBF is fully aware the impact this decision has on a certain number of our members, players, and teams. IWBF remains deeply committed to delivering a competitive and fair qualification process that will bring the world’s best teams and players to LA28. Every effort will be made to present wheelchair basketball in its fullest form in Los Angeles highlighting the exceptional talent, intensity and the skill of our sport.
Looking ahead, IWBF will continue to work closely with the IPC and our partners to advocate for and explore ways to further grow and enhance the visibility of wheelchair basketball on the world stage, while also creating new pathways for more countries to participate at the highest levels of the sport.
Together, we will build a strong and vibrant pathway toward LA28 and beyond.
