African Congress 2011
In addition to the African championship tournament in Rabat Morocco one other important thing that happened in Rabat was the Congress of IWBF Africa.
The new Executive Council (2011-2015) was elected. Returning as President was Hamid El Aouni, (Morocco).
African Executive Council
President - Hamid El Aouni (Morocco)
Returning members:
Classification Officer - Loleta Krige, (South Africa)
Technical Officer - Nico Viviers (South Africa)
Vice President of the Northern Region: Nasser Al Sayed Youssef (Egypt)
Vice President of the Central Region: Adoki Obereniene Tamunosiki (Nigeria)
Vice President of the Southern Region: Richman Ndindwa (South Africa)
Shawn Moorgas (South Africa) was reappointed as Secretary General of the Zone.
Some very important decisions were taken and I was especially pleased with the decision on the new competition format. In 2012 there will a tournament in each of the three regions, Northern Africa, Central Africa and Southern Africa with the winner of each advancing to the 2013 African Championship. There they will join the winner of this tournament and the host country with one spot left for a wild card entry. This new format can only lead to more countries getting involved when they realize that they can start at a regional championship.
They all have a big task ahead of them to get the new competitions in place for next year. All have committed to making it happen. Soon the call will go out from the Secretary General for the bids for the three regional championships. I encourage the nations to get involved and host a regional championship. The championships will all include a referee and classifier course. Hosting will also allow the country to learn more about wheelchair basketball
Our congratulations to everyone elected. We are confident that you can get this done. I am looking forward to hearing about all the activity in Africa over the next year.
